JUST ONE RACE: NEWS!!!!!!
NEW BREMEN, N.Y. -- When the green flag dropped John Papin didn’t have a winning car. When the final half of the 76-lap ASA Challenger Late Model division was in progress, he did. The Redwood native made it three wins in a row in front of a crowd of 1,400+ but it didn’t come so easy. After taking three pit stops in the early going, Papin rallied through the field and passed a stout sophomore Late Model driver in Levi Arthur on lap-53 to cruise on to his 12th career win at Adirondack.
In the Hi-Output Sport Compact division Andre Roggie backed up a second place finish from last week to claim his 29th career win in the Four-Cylinder class. Chuck Meyer recorded his second win of the season in the True Stock division, after holding off defending track champion in Chris Typhair. Rounding out the night in the Lite Trucks would be Randy Mooney fending off the “Madman” Mike Ramos in the late going to take the final laurels of the Independence Day Weekend celebration at AIS.
A wild start in the ASA Challenger Late Model division, shook the entire field up right from the get go. Jim Southard and Arthur made up the front row for the first green flag of the event with Southard taking the early command into turn one. Before one lap went in the books Mark Scoville and Phil Arnold would come together on the front stretch spinning into turn one. A handful of cars were involved including that of Papin, and Chris Ross. All cars would pit, and continue on. On the restart, and after the completion of the first lap, Arthur was now the leader and quickly he gained a big advantage over the rest of the field. Coming out of turn four to complete the second lap the yellow flag was tossed once again for a spinning Southard. Drivers Billy Coyle, Bill Bertrand, and Jerry Dineen as well as point leader Bryant Trim all came together and each would bring their mounts to the attention of their crew. Trim was done for the night with heavy front-end damage. As racing resumed, Arthur continued to lead and he later hit lap traffic by lap eleven. On lap 20, hotshoes Tommy Cloce, and Chris Ross made their presence known showing their way in the third and fourth positions, with Papin making his first bid in the top-five, taking fifth.
On lap 22, with Colby Altmire spinning on the front stretch and bringing about a yellow flag, Papin was seen taking his #50 Monte Carlo down pit road for the second time in the event. On lap 23 the field came to a crawl once again, this time for fluid on the track, and Papin was shown ducking back into the pits for the third and final time. It wouldn’t take long for Papin to come back through the field. After restarting from the back of the pack, Papin was already in the top-five by lap 34. As racing continued, the top-five positions at the halfway point were filled by Arthur, Lee Gill, Ross, Papin, and Cloce. One lap later, Cloce was headed pitside with necessary adjustments on his machine. After racing was back under way, Papin advanced position once again on lap 42, taking the third spot from Ross. Shortly after on lap 43, he would start in on the top two and battle Gill for the second position before making it his own on lap 46. The sites were now set on Arthur. Arthur, who is getting married this coming weekend, was having the drive of his career aboard his family owned and unsponsored #6. As Papin brought his nose to the back bumper of Arthur on lap 48 they had now engaged in a tyrannizing battle for the lead. By lap 51, Arthur would slide up entering turn one and it was all clear sailing for Papin. As he cycled under Arthur, Papin was shown the leader at the completion of lap 52. Getting around Arthur shortly after was veteran standout Chris Ross, looking to see what he had for Papin. But no one else was in the same class. Clearly the quickest of the field, Papin was shown putting a clinic on at the front of the pack, and he easily continued on to the checkered flag pulling off the hat trick, in winning for the third time this season at the Wide and Wild 4/10ths mile. “The crew really has supplied me with a great car. Every time I get out there (on the track) the car just gets better and better, I couldn’t thank them and my sponsors enough,” said Papin after the event. Finishing in the second spot was Ross, and with a big cheer from the local crowd, Arthur was credited third. Taking the fourth position was Gill while Cloce battled back to take fifth.
